Earlier that morning, several thousand people rallied for JFK outside the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth, Texas.

From left, President Kennedy speaks outside the hotel. Behind him stands an unidentified man, Sen. Ralph W. Yarborough, Texas Gov. John Connally, and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson.
The presidential motorcade passes through the intersection of Main Street and Griffin Street in Dallas. The 10-mile route led to Trade Mart, where JFK was supposed to deliver a speech. The speech was to end with: ''Peace on earth, good will toward men.' That must always be our goal.'

Clockwise from left, Texas Gov. John Connally, President John F. Kennedy, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the governor's wife Nellie Connally ride together.
President Kennedy is seen approximately one minute before he was shot.

Seen through the limousine window, President Kennedy appears to raise his hand toward his head within seconds of being shot while Jacqueline Kennedy holds his forearm in an effort to aid him. Gov. John Connally, in the front seat, was also shot. The motorocade is proceeding along Elm Street past the Texas School Book Depository.

Johnson is sworn in as President in the cabin of Air Force One with widowed Jacqueline Kennedy at his side. In background, from left, are Jack Valenti, Johnson's administrative assistant; Rep. Albert Thomas, D-Texas; Mrs. Johnson; and Rep. Jack Brooks, D-Texas.

A crowd listens outside a radio shop in New York City for news on President Kennedy. He was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. local time in Dallas.

People look over stacks of the Dallas Times Herald's final edition of the day. The headline reads 'President Dead.'
