Maulana who did Kasab's last rites flees with family

Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab
The maulana who did the last rites of 26/11 terrorist Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab at the Yerawada central jail on November 21 has been missing from the city for the past couple of months.

After completing the procedures for Kasab's hanging, the jail authorities had asked the Yerawada police to seek the maulana's services for Kasab's burial inside the jail premises.

A senior jail officer, who did not wish to be identified, told dna: "Senior jail officers had asked the Yerawada police to bring a Muslim priest from the area. They had strictly told the police not to reveal anything to the maulana about the operation.

"Accordingly, the Yerawada police had told the maulana that an unclaimed body was to be buried inside the jail premises and he was needed to do the last rites."

The officer said that the maulana was brought to the jail in a police vehicle. "Once inside the jail premises, senior jail officers revealed the identity of Kasab to him and asked him to conduct the burial.

"Kasab's burial lasted for only a few minutes. The priest recited some verses from the Quran as the terrorist's body was lowered into the grave."

He said that jail officers had specifically instructed the maulana to maintain secrecy about the operation. Later, he was escorted back home.

Another officer told dna: "After Kasab's burial, we had asked our men to keep a tab on the maulana's house in Yerawada for his security. Later, he sold his house and went missing along with his family. He did not inform us."
